Behind the Dedication
(this is an example of what we will write to create your Dedication Story)
Some books begin with an idea. Others begin with a life-changing moment.
Speak Up and Stay Alive – The Patient Advocate Hospital Survival Guide was born from one family’s unimaginable healthcare crisis.
The book is dedicated to my mother, whose life changed forever during what was expected to be routine shoulder surgery. While recovering, she suffered a heart attack that went undiagnosed for more than six hours. Four EKGs were performed, yet no one read the results—each one clearly indicating that an acute myocardial infarction was in progress. By the time the error was discovered, irreversible damage had been done.
What followed were four harrowing months in intensive care and rehabilitation. There were countless moments when we believed we might lose her. Once I realized what had happened, I rarely left her side. Living in the hospital day after day opened my eyes to a reality I had never imagined: even in places dedicated to healing, patients can be frighteningly vulnerable. I also discovered the critical role of an informed, determined advocate.
When my mother was finally discharged, we were told she likely had less than two years to live.
Instead, we were given eight and a half extraordinary years.
Those years became an unexpected gift. Together, we learned to navigate an often overwhelming healthcare system. We asked questions, challenged assumptions, sought answers, and refused to be silent. Along the way, my mother showed me a strength I had never fully appreciated. She taught me resilience without ever intending to teach it. She reminded me that courage is often quiet, and that love sometimes looks like showing up every single day.
She also changed me.
Because of her, I learned to put others before myself. I learned the importance of being an educated healthcare consumer and found my own voice by speaking up when it mattered most.
My greatest hope is that my mother knows her experience became a gift to countless others. Because she survived, I witnessed firsthand the dangers patients can face and the extraordinary difference an advocate can make.
Her journey inspired this book, and through it, thousands of readers have learned to ask questions, trust their instincts, and speak up when something doesn’t seem right.
The dedication simply says:
“To my mom. Your experience was a gift and a lesson to everyone around you. Thank you for surviving.”
Those few words carry an entire lifetime of gratitude. Without her survival, this story would never have been written. Without her courage, countless others might never have found their own.
She didn’t just survive.
She gave others the knowledge—and the confidence—to do the same.
