Dear Author Charles Weeden,
Thank you for the chance to step into Awena’s world. Your story Tissiack: A Sierran Siren blends culture, family ties, and personal challenges into a moving narrative. The book thoughtfully explores themes of identity, belonging, and the weight of history, while depicting a young girl’s poignant journey to find herself. These layered explorations add emotional depth to the book, inviting readers to reflect on their own experiences.
The deep bond between Awena and Ama held my attention. Awena’s inner turmoil—torn between two distinct worlds—resonates powerfully and adds depth to her character. The metaphor of her cross-country running serves not only as a means of escape but also as a poignant journey of self-discovery, beautifully illustrating her quest for identity amid conflict. I found the exploration of cultural nuances particularly captivating. The roundhouse stands as a striking symbol of community, while the ceremonies are imbued with deep significance, revealing layers of tradition and history. The interactions among community members pulse with genuine warmth and connection, showcasing a rich tapestry of ancestral heritage.
At times, the shifting perspectives pulled me out of the story, interrupting the flow and leaving me longing for more cohesion. Given that the story largely unfolds from Awena’s viewpoint, passages with detailed historical background or information she wouldn’t focus on felt out of place. While interesting, the authorial commentary and long historical digressions sometimes overshadowed the emotional momentum and slowed the pace—especially when presented in large sections.
What stayed with me most, though, was Awena herself. Her uncertainty, determination, and push to understand the mysterious voice calling to her make her a compelling character. You’ve planted the seeds of a moving and meaningful journey, and I look forward to seeing where you take her next.
Warm regards,
